To receive it sealed, yes — but they don’t need it before you send. A sealed letter travels as a link. If they have Lettera, tapping it lands the letter on their desk, closed, and it opens in your wax on the morning you chose. If they don’t, the same link shows a page with the wax, who it is from and the day it opens — never the words — and a button to get the free app. Once they have it, the same link delivers the letter.

And if they never install it, you’re not stuck. On the arrival day your own desk hands you the letter as a finished page — a picture you can send by Messages, email or print — that anyone can read, no app required.

Seal it for them, then open it under Ahead of you and choose Hand it over sealed. The share sheet offers the letter as a link — send it by Messages, email, or anything else. You can hand it over as often as you like until the day comes.

Prefer an attachment? Or hand over the file sends a .lettera document instead, which suits AirDrop. Since version 1.3, tapping that file in Files or Messages opens it straight into Lettera; a short note travels with it so a reader without the app knows where to get it. If an app ever shows the file as plain text rather than a document, use the link instead — that is what it is for.

The wax is a promise, not a lock. Inside your own device the letter is held closed until its day — Lettera will not open it early even if a notification arrives early after a change of time zone. But a sealed letter you send to someone is carried in good faith, the way a wax seal always was: a determined person who has the link or the file could read it before the morning. Don’t put in a shared letter anything that would harm you if it were opened early.

One thing the link does guarantee: the letter is inside the link itself — the part after the #, which browsers never send to any server. Nothing about your letter reaches Mama Bloom, ever.

Never. Open the app and write. There is no sign-up, no email, no password — nothing to forget and nothing for us to lose.

In the app’s private space on your device. If you turn on “Keep a copy in iCloud,” Lettera also mirrors the archive in Apple’s private CloudKit database under your Apple account. Apple may separately include app data in your iCloud or computer device backup, depending on your backup settings. Mama Bloom operates no sync server and cannot access any of those copies.

Deleting the app removes its on-device archive. If a private iCloud copy still exists, reinstalling Lettera under the same Apple account and turning sync back on can bring that archive back. A device backup may also restore app data. Without an iCloud copy, backup or export, the on-device archive is gone. Before deleting, use Export to save a copy you control.

No. Sealing is deliberate and final — that’s the whole point. It keeps you honest with the person you’ll be when it arrives. Write in that spirit; nothing forces you to seal before you’re ready.

No. A letter you set down — a call, a swipe, an empty battery — waits for you. The next time you open the composer it offers the words back: Pick it up or Start fresh, your choice. A set-down letter lives only on your device; it never enters exports, iCloud or notifications, and Let it all go erases it too.

Yes. Beside the five fixed doors — tonight, tomorrow morning, Sunday, a month, a year — the composer offers A day I choose: a calendar for any future morning. A birthday, an anniversary, the morning after something hard. It stays sealed until then like any other letter.

Any letter can be answered with Write back, and a reply remembers what it answers. When a letter belongs to a chain, its page ends with An exchange of four letters, begun in March — read the whole exchange, and the correspondence list marks such letters. The exchange reads oldest-first, with the silences between letters said out loud: three days later, four months later. Letters that have not arrived yet keep their wax there too.

The widget wears whichever desk you chose in the app — Nightfall, Foolscap, Candlelight, Marble or The Study. Change the desk and the widget follows. It shows only whether a letter is waiting and when the next one lands; never a word of any letter.

On a calm day you write short letters to the you inside Anger, Dread, Grief, Overwhelm, Sleepless nights, or Doubt. In a hard moment you tap the storm you’re in, and your own earlier voice answers — with a matched passage from the ancients beneath it. No AI counsellor. The wisest person about your 2 a.m. is you, three weeks ago.

No. If you ask for a suggested first line on a supported device, that runs on-device with Apple Intelligence and sees only the letter you’re writing, not your archive. Lettera does not send the writing to Mama Bloom or to a cloud AI service.

The core app is free forever. Patron is an optional subscription (monthly or yearly) shown at your App Store’s price for your region. There’s no free trial — the free app never expires, so nothing can bill you for one you forgot. Cancel anytime in your Apple account; your letters are untouched either way.

On your iPhone or iPad: Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → Lettera → Cancel. Billing is handled by Apple, so cancellation and refunds go through your Apple account, not through us.

English, German, French, Spanish and Japanese. The interface and all forty letters in Season One are available in all five. Choose the language inside the app — the quiet corner, Language — or leave it on System to follow your device. The app, its content and future notifications change immediately; widgets, the Apple Watch companion and Siri follow the language set on the device itself.

iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. The full correspondence desk lives on iPhone and iPad. The Watch companion is a brief, private pause; personal letters and arrivals stay off the wrist.

Arrival alerts are scheduled locally on your device and only ever say a letter has arrived — never a word of its contents. Nothing about your writing travels over a network to deliver them.

In the quiet corner, Export writes the correspondence archive to a readable file in a location you choose. Exporting does not remove the archive from Lettera or iCloud. Import brings a file back, merged letter by letter — nothing already on the desk is overwritten, and the app tells you exactly how many letters it welcomed.

Erase every copy first connects to your private iCloud and removes Lettera’s CloudKit mirror, even if ordinary sync is off, and then clears the archive on the device. If iCloud cannot be reached, Lettera erases nothing and asks you to try again rather than leaving an old copy behind. Turning sync off by itself does not delete an existing iCloud copy. Erasing is final: a letter you let go is remembered as gone, so importing an older export afterwards will not bring it back — Lettera says so rather than pretending the file was empty.

You can write, seal, receive and read without a connection. A network is used only for features you choose that need one: private iCloud sync, buying or restoring Patron, or a sharing service such as Messages or Mail.
